SQALE : Speech Quality Assessment in Language Engineering

Steve Young, Tony Robinson, Phil Woodland, David Pye

This project is a collaboration between TNO (Netherlands), LIMSI (France), Philips (Germany) and CUED to develop an assessment framework for very large vocabulary speech recognition. It will follow the general paradigm used in the current ARPA CSR programme but will be adapted to suit the multi-lingual aspects of Europe.

TNO will act as the central coordinator and each of the remaining partners will conduct a formal evaluation of their 20k word continuous speech recognition systems on at least two languages. The aim will be to develop a set of protocols which can deal with multiple languages and to perform cross-comparisons across recognition systems and languages. Sponsor: EC Language Research Engineering Programme.
