Awards from the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers

The Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers is a livery company in the City of London. Amongst other things, they pursue charitable and educational activities devoted to the furtherance of the instrumentation industry in the UK.

Each year one undergraduate scholarship and one postgraduate bursary is allocated to students studying at Cambridge University Engineering Department. Students from the Department may also be nominated for the Instrument Makers Beloe Fellowship.

Scholarships for Fourth Year Undergraduates

An undergraduate award of 500 pounds is normally made to the student with the highest position on the combined order of merit in the Engineering Part IIB exams who is formally registered as studying in the Engineering Area of "Instrumentation and Control".

The final decision about the award of the scholarship is made by the Scientific Instrument Makers Company. The Department makes a nomination based on the paragraph above, but it is then up to the Instrument Makers to decide whether to award the scholarship or to request an alternate nomination.

Bursaries for Postgraduate Students

The Instrument Makers offer a postgraduate bursary to a student from the Engineering Department each academic year. It is worth approximately 1000 pounds. All postgraduate students working toward a Ph.D. in the Department of Engineering are eligible to apply. The criteria for selection are (a) relevance of the research to the field of instrumentation (interpreted in its broadest sense), (b) the excellence of the research and (c) financial need (candidates who are already in receipt of more than a standard research council grant may not be considered eligible for this additional support).
