Senior Research Associate/Research Assistant/Associates in Speech Recognition and Speech Synthesis, Dialogue Systems Group

Applications are invited for two research positions in automatic speech recognition (ASR) and statistical speech synthesis. These will be associated with projects based in the Dialogue Systems Group at the Cambridge University Engineering Department.

One project is to develop methods to automatically evaluate English-speaking skills of non-native speakers in oral tests. The specific task is to investigate non-native speech recognition and associated scoring approaches. This position is available immediately.

The second project concerns the development of dialogue systems for interactive web-search using natural conversation with specific interests in fast adaptation and noise robustness for real-time speech recognition; and expressive statistical synthesis with rich contexts. This position will be available in the fall of 2011.

HTK and ATK is used as the speech recognition platforms for all our projects. The successful candidate will be familiar with HMM based speech recognition or synthesis techniques. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in adaptation techniques, noise robustness, end-to-end implementation of speech recognition systems, and familiarity with the ATK/HTK platform. Candidates who have or will shortly have a PhD are preferred although candidates with comparable research experience are also encouraged to apply. Salaries will be in the range £27428 to £46696 depending on qualifications and experience.

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the leading groups in statistical speech and language processing. Cambridge provides excellent research facilities and there are extensive opportunities for collaboration, visits and attending conferences.

To apply, complete form CHRIS /6 (cover sheet for C.V.s) available at http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/forms/ and send electronically with your C.V. and covering letter to Mrs Janet Milne, email: div-f@eng.cam.ac.uk. The closing date for the application is Nov. 10th, 2011.

Research Associate in Statistical Dialogue Systems, Dialogue Systems Group

Applications are invited for a research position in statistical spoken dialogue systems associated with projects based in the Dialogue Systems Group at the Cambridge University Engineering Department.

The main focus of the work will be on the development of techniques and algorithms for implementing robust statistical dialogue systems which can reconfigure on-line using dynamic ontologies with the aim of providing natural conversational spoken access to hyper-local web-based information sources. This work will build on our existing dynamic Bayesian Network dialogue management framework and a new micro-turn architecture which provides a sophisticated natural turn-taking capability.

The successful candidate will be familiar with machine learning and Bayesian Networks and preference will be given to candidates with experience in spoken dialogue systems. Candidates should have, or will shortly have, a PhD. However, candidates with comparable research experience are also encouraged to apply. Salaries will be in the range £27428 to £35788 depending on qualifications and experience.
