[Univ of Cambridge] UK Speech Conference 2017
11-12 September, Cambridge





The 2017 UK Speech Conference will take place in Cambridge on the 11th and 12th of September 2017. It aims to bring together researchers in the UK and Ireland Speech Science and Technology community, both in academia and industry to share information about ongoing research activities, to meet old friends and make new ones. The conference is organised by the CUED Speech Research Group, with collaboration from the UK Speech Community.

Important Dates

  • Accommodation reserved block ends: this has now finished
  • Abstract submission: 18 August, 2017
  • Notification of acceptance: 25 August, 2017
  • Registration: 20 June - 6 September, 2017
    • Drinks reception, dinner and lunches are at capacity
    • Registrations are possible after the 6th but no lunch can be provided
  • Conference: 11-12 September, 2017

Abstract submission

As per usual we encourage poster presentations from students and researchers. There are a few slots for oral presentation. The content presented at this meeting does not have to be entirely novel as long as it is recent. The work presented can be work in progress. Demos are also welcome.

  • To present a poster or demo at the conference submit the following to Jeremy Wong at jhmw2(at)cam.ac.uk:
    • Title of Poster e.g. "Use of Graphemic Lexicons for Spoken Language Assessment"
    • Names of Author(s) e.g. K.Knill, M.J.F.Gales, K.Kyriakopoulos, A.Ragni, Y.Wang
    • Abstract - submit as one page pdf file containing: Title, Author(s), Affiliation(s) and abstract. Extended abstracts are encouraged (e.g. including pictures, key results tables/figures) but not required. There is no fixed template. See the abstracts from UK Speech 2016 for examples.
    • Poster/Oral - most papers will be presented as posters. If you'd like your paper to be considered for an oral presentation please note this with your abstract submission.
  • Deadline: 18th August

The conference will start from lunchtime on Monday 11th and finish around 3-3:30pm on Tuesday 12th.

    • Posters
      • Should be a maximum size of A0 portrait or A1 landscape.
      • Pins will be provided.
      • Can be printed at CUED for £15. Email a request with the pdf of the poster to div-f(at)eng.cam.ac.uk by Wednesday 6th September.
      • Posters for sessions 1 and 2 can be put up before the preceding talk.
      • At least one of the authors must be present at your poster during the poster session.
    • Oral Presentations
      • Oral presenters will have 15 minutes to present, followed by 4 minutes for questions, and 1 minute for speaker change.
      • Use of the local PC is recommended.

Location and directions

  • The conference will be held at the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge (Trumpington Street CB2 1PZ)
    • There is no parking available at the department, see here for council parking information.
    • The department is 5-15 minutes by taxi (depending on traffic) or about 20 minutes walk from the railway station.
  • Lunch will be held at St Catharine's College, "Catz", which is 10 minutes walk from the department (map) (Trumpington Street, CB2 1RL).
  • A drinks reception and dinner will be held on Monday 11 September at Trinity Hall, which has some illustrious alumni and former fellows practiced in the arts of speech communication including Frank Fallside, Tony Robinson, Mark Gales, Andrew Marr and Rachel Weisz (Trinity Lane, CB2 1TJ). The dress code is standard conference wear (casual).
