Free Software from the Medical Imaging Group
Stradview is a user-friendly medical 3D data visualisation package which can run under Windows or Linux, and implements many of the algorithms described in our research pages. It can load most types of DICOM data or image sequences, and produce very high quality surface models and surface and volume-based visualisations which can also be turned into movies using scripts. It can also be used for cortical bone mapping from DICOM CT data. Stradview was originally developed from Stradwin, but without any of the live ultrasound acquisition features, which makes it much more appropriate for those who only need to visualise and analyse existing medical data.
Stradview Features
- Runs under Windows and Linux.
- Understands many different data formats, including DICOM, Mindways QCT, ITK, Analyze HDR, NRRD and many image formats.
- Can be used to take image sequences without any 3D locations and create 3D data from these.
- Accurate data re-slicing algorithms which can handle non-parallel image sequences.
- Sub-pixel accurate manual and automatic extraction of high quality surfaces from 3D data.
- Cortical Bone Measurement for accurate assesment of cortical thickness and other properties.
- High quality surface visualisations, including correct surface transparency for multiple surfaces and non-realistic renderings.
- High quality volume visualisations, including radiant shadowing for much more realistic effects, and cubic interpolation for high accuracy.
- The ability to automatically create image sequences for visualisation movies.
- Complex cropping of re-slices and volume renderings based on arbitrary surfaces.
- Measurements using data landmarks and by drawing on 3D surfaces.

Stradwin Features
Stradwin is an older system which offers acquisition facilities for recording 3D ultrasound data, but not the advanced visualisation features of Stradview. We still offer this online but are no longer actively developing it and, as a result, support is limited.
- Runs under Linux using v4l2 video, or under Windows using DirectShow.
- Works with Polhemus Fastrak, Polhemus Patriot, Northern Digital Polaris or Ascension MiniBird, LaserBird or Flock of Birds position sensor.
- Works with PAL/NTSC ultrasound images, radio frequency ultrasound images, and several specific ultrasound machines.
- Incorporates fast, accurate, calibration facility that is even easier to use than the Stradx calibration tool.
- Provides real-time flat reslice tool that can be oriented interactively at any angle. Also includes a tool to create orthogonal reslice views.
- Has an easy-to-use manual segmentation facility and an accurate volume measurement tool.
- Offers a facility for defining landmark points in the data and using them to measure distances and angles.
- Incorporates a tool for calibrating a pointer which can be used to locate external fiducial landmarks in 3D space.
- Has a tool for aligning the internal representation with an external (isocentre) coordinate system. Reslice images can then be produced parallel to one of the axes of this coordinate system.
- Has a novel "hands free" recording mode.
- Works with Doppler data.
- Uses an open file format and includes comprehensive documentation.
